I don’t live in Hollywood, but Vincent Chase does. Not only does he live there, he’s also an actor. Like the shorter lived Kitchen Confidential, Entourage shows us an almost surreal world and tries to make us a part of it. From the unique problems of having to deal with eccentric personalities and the excesses of Hollywood life, to the more mundane events, Entourage tries to place us inside life as a Hollywood actor and make us part of the entourage.

Created by Doug Ellin for HBO along with executive directors Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg – on whose experiences the show is loosely based started in 2004. In 2005, Entourage was nominated for five awards, including the Golden Globe’s Best Television Series, Comedy or Musical. In 2006 Jeremy Piven playing Ari Gold won the Outstanding Supporting Actor Award, the first award that Entourage won. Now in its fourth season, Entourage promises to continue to improve.

While there are many cameos that come into the story, from M. Night Shyamalan to Anthony Michael Hall, the main characters are Vincent Chase along with his entourage from Queens, New York. “Vince” Chase is played by Adrian Grenier (“Hart’s War”) is supported by his closest best friend Eric played by Kevin Connoly (“John Q” and “Antwone Fisher.” Also part of the regular cast is Vince’s half brother Drama played by Kevin Dillon (“Platoon”), Turtle, the house manager and party animal (Jerry Farrara “Grounded for Life,” “Leap of Faith”) and Jeremy Piven’s (“Old School”) award winning Ari Gold, Vince’s hyper aggressive and always lovable agent.

The reviews of Entourage swing from Entertainment Weekly’s “Almost preposterously enjoyable” to Chicago Tribune’s “bloated caricature of its first-season self,” though the Tribune is alone in it’s condemnation of the show. User reviews from metacritic.com show the same love or hate relationship with the show, with an average rating of 8.5 split between a high number of 10s and a smaller number of significantly lower ratings, usually reflecting a particular episode rather than the series as a whole.

What all the critics agree on is that this is not high drama, those looking for the next nail biting thriller, will need to go someplace else, those looking for a good natured (Peoples Weekly) smart, sharp and funny (Wall Street Journal) comedy spoofing real-life celebrities (Detroit Free Press) need look no further than Entourage.
