Description:
Developed by the internal medicine residency teaching staff at the University of Colorado, this book presents patient-oriented cases for 88 diseases in all areas of internal medicine. Case studies follow a question-and-answer format that mirrors rounds presentations. Each case study walks you through the workup and management of the problem and reviews the underlying pathophysiology. The book is an excellent review tool for resident in-service exams or American Board of Internal Medicine certification exams. This edition's questions and problems have been extensively rewritten to incorporate new diagnostic methods and treatments. Coverage of urology and hepatology has been expanded.
This book is a review, in patient-oriented case format, of 90 of the more important and commonly encountered internal medicine problems and diseases. This is the second edition. The purpose is to provide real patient cases in internal medicine that enhance and motivate learning for both medical students and house staff. These objectives are both worthy and needed and are met by the editor. The book is written for medical students and house staff physicians rotating through internal medicine and the subspecialty branches. It is also written as a teaching aid for attending physicians involved in medical education. In my opinion, this book would also be an excellent teaching tool for family medicine and emergency medicine. Each chapter contributor is a sub-specialist in the area of internal medicine for which the chapter is written. All appear to be credible authorities in the subject matter. The book contains ten selected topics in internal medicine. Within each selected topic (i.e., endocrinology), five to 12 different diseases (i.e., diabetes mellitus) are covered in a question-and-answer format. In the first paragraph the reader is prompted to answer general questions about the specific disease itself. Answers are provided in the second paragraph. This is followed by a single case presentation of the disease. The reader is then prompted to answer questions about pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of each case. A detailed discussion of the case questions serves as a conclusion. This is a very effective and stimulating way of delivering information. The question format allows readers to think about the answer prior to reading further, challenging their knowledgebase. The cases are up-to-date, realistic, and pertinent. The answers are thoroughly discussed with detailed and relevant information. The chapters are set up such that individual internal medicine topics are easy to find and each disease within the chapter is clearly marked out in bold print. Considering the vast expanse of internal medicine and the size of the book, the editor and contributors have done an excellent job of selecting and covering the most pertinent information. This is an excellent book for the purpose of teaching medical students and house staff physicians in internal medicine, family medicine, and emergency medicine. It is practical and all residents and attending staff physicians should know this material completely. This book can be used as a teaching aid for acquiring relevant knowledge during a medical rotation or complementing exam preparation.
