Unclaimed Government Money - Does The Government Owe You Money?

We have all longed to find that stash of money hidden underground in a fruit jar, or in a sock in the back of the loft. Hey, the good news is the state and federal agencies are holding over 30 billion dollars in unclaimed money and property, and they want to get it to the rightful owners. You could be one of those people they are looking for.

Sometimes it can take some digging to find money you have coming. My father died quite suddenly, and our family was sure he had money in places he had had no reason to disclose to anyone. After all, he had always been very capable of taking care of his finances. We did a little searching, but gave up pretty quickly to return to our busy schedules. Unless you have a dedicated treasure hunter in the family this is usually what happens. Therefore, the money lies unclaimed, sometimes for many years and sometimes forever.

Where does this money come from?

What is lost money and property? Basically it is money that has been forgotten about. Why is it lost? Sometimes that proverbial rich uncle actually did leave money to an uninformed heir. Most often, this money is in old bank accounts, bonds, old pension funds, unclaimed insurance and utility companies and unclaimed wages and even in safe deposit boxes. There is also lost property waiting to be claimed.

How do I find this money

A good place to begin your search is on a state or federal web site that offers the tools to search for missing assets. They have resource pages that can answer important questions you might have. The first thing that a potential recipient should ask is "how do I find out if the money is really mine?"

Sometimes the money or property is shared and it will be necessary to find out what steps to take to receive the money.

Watch out for scammers

As in most cases there are scammers where money is concerned. Watch out for some sites that offer to find money for you for a fee. Try it on your own first. There are many sites that allow you to search for free. If you do find money, that is the time to enlist help in getting the property or money owed you.

When you began to search don't be surprised to see that there will probably be several other people who share your name.

Start your search

How do you get started? Type your name in a search engine and ask if you have any unclaimed money. On my first try I found over 50 different sites with information that I was looking for. I found my name numerous times, but addresses and birthdates didn't match up.

No doubt, we would all like to see our name pop up with thousands of dollars just waiting for us to come after it. Who knows, you just might be one of the fortunate ones. Go ahead. Type in your name and begin your search.
